PARADISE IS CALLING

This overcast weather has me dreaming of the days we spent along the shores of island beaches.

It would still most often rain this time of year, but if it was, it was a sporadic shower coalescing with the warmth of filtered sunlight. Hiking across lava formations and tossing huge chunks of coral and obsidian into the sea at water's edge was all that mattered in terms of our to-do list for the day. We feasted on cool home-made sushi and drank coconut milk with a dash of rum, our faces still sticky from the juices of papayas running down our chins as we bit into their seeded neon flesh at breakfast.

Today I tamed my wild side with a touch of the rugged yarn in this a-line skirt. Keeping in line with my new resolution I carried my vegan faux-ostrich clutch and tossed on some vintage sandals. This look is both fun and sophisticated... and can I talk about how much I love my hair right now!? Not an easy thing to say either; I'm currently growing it out from my bitchy badass bob and back to the days of my Heidi Klum length and lash-kissing bangs.

If I ever may find myself enjoying an early en-suite breakfast in my hotel on safari; outfit packing... here we go.

A little piece of post from Paris. I adore the French and their easy-chic coolfactor of wearing nothing but a shirtdress, sprucing it up with a slim belt and heels, and looking like a million bucks. Inspired by their elegant simplicity, and in continuing on with my New Years' resolution to revitalize my daily routine, I am now starting my days with a morning workout and getting into the habit of carrying nothing but a scarf and a clutch... unless I have my laptop (for which there will also be a very simple and chic-francais inspired crossbody bag... you know, in case boyfriend and I also decide to transport via bike or vespa.)

Spring shoes in sweet pastel hues.

I had forgotten how much I love the comfort of an ankle strap! Usually I shy away from closed-toe pumps because it's so hard for me to find some that I can deal with. I grew up playing a lot of soccer, and so I'm very weary of putting too much pressure on my toes... retained memory of old injuries, I'm sure. My new Audrey Brookes fit me like Cinderella's glass slippers, and I'm dying over the perfectly neutral shades of seafoamy-grey and taupe snake. I'll show them to you in a look soon!

SOMETHING BLUE

I have been given the honour of bridesmaid in one of my best girlfriends weddings this year, and our dresses are... yep, blue. Navy blue to be exact. Now this treat has me on the hunt for matching or slightly off-tone shoes to go with my dress. Of course the bride thinks I'm crazy to be planning for heels when the ceremony is taking place on a beautiful open meadow

Meet Jess Lam, Co-Founder of the popularly growing fashion site, StyleSays. I got the chance to sit down with this dapper dude over coffee and chat a bit about fashion, social media and the business behind a start-up. Jess not only has a good head on his shoulders, but he also lends verisimilitude to my testament that there are some seriously stylish guys in SF. Read on for snippets of our convo, and be sure to check out StyleSays for yourself, you'll be hooked.

EÀLM:
While you hail from a midwest town, your transition to the San Francisco lifestyle seems to have been a very easy move for you. Tell me about the likenesses and differences you may see from Oklahoma to California, and would you say that your personal style has changed much between the two?

JL: The transition was pretty easy for me because I started imagining myself moving to California while still a teenager. I imagined lots of beaches and palm trees. I was right for the most part since I spent my first few years in California at Stanford. To my surprise there were some big similarities between the two states. The people may have different political views on the surface but both are kind and honest. At least from my personal experiences. My style has definitely changed, especially in the last year. I dressed somewhat conservatively in high school, trying to stay within the norm. I was pretty nerdy. While living in SF I've been exploring different styles and finding what I like best. I still have a long way to go.

EÀLM: How would you describe your personal style and your tastes for things, material or not?
JL: I prefer a minimalist style in both fashion and design. I really respect the thought that goes into creating simple, beautiful designs with a purpose. Of course it's always fun to throw in some loud colors but I'll save those for the weekend.
EÀLM: What first fueled you and your development team into creating StyleSays? What does it mean to you?
JL: First and foremost I think it's gone this far because we really enjoy working together. I'm surrounded by some of the smartest and most talented people I've ever met. Originally we came together to make e-commerce much more enjoyable for shoppers, ourselves included. We noticed that so much of online shopping is about discovery. I loved sending my friends new clothing and music that I come across. Then if they liked what I sent sometimes I buy it. We realized that friends, peers, bloggers or almost anyone can influence your taste, so we wanted to integrate that into the online shopping experience. So when you come to StyleSays you'll most likely discover clothing you've never seen, stores you didn't know existed and people who can show you how to tie it all together in an outfit. To me StyleSays is about increasing shoppers' confidence through discovery and validation from a fashion focused community. Making people feel better about the way they look is something that I can be proud to wake up every morning and do.

EÀLM: Amen to that! There are so many great features I see you and the team implementing almost daily! And your traffic is rapidly increasing. Tell me a bit about the idea of featured stylists.
JL: Some of my biggest learnings while creating StyleSays have come from fashion blogs and their authors. Everything from community development to putting together ridiculous Jeffrey Campbell wedges with a new Givenchy bag. For readers they teach them how to adopt new trends, create lasting wardrobes, and discover their own style. All of this combined instills self confidence in people just like we want to with StyleSays. About a month ago we realized these fashion muses should be as much a part of StyleSays as the clothing. What good are those new leopard heels if you don't know how to wear them? Look to a Featured Stylist for the answer.

EÀLM: So true. I certainly love seeing the ways multiple fashion muses can pull things together, and discovering new products and vendors is always a fun experience, like finding a long-lost friend with matching Charlotte Olympia heels you both bought on the same day. Where do you look for new ideas and trends to pull from for featured products on StyleSays?
JL: Ah I may have given this away a bit with my previous answer. I keep a strong pulse on fashion blogs that post clothing and trends the StyleSays community will like. I'm starting to trust my own judgement more and more but then again my knowledge is based off what I've learned from these bloggers. One great thing about being in San Francisco is that I also get to witness a lot of unique styles in person. I feel like a lot of our featured items also come from what inspires me on the street.

Bf and I had dim sum the other day at my favorite place to go, Fu Lam Mum.

I can never get enough of the jasmin tea, steamed pork buns (my favorite), shrimp balls, sesame balls, egg custard and dumplings! Delish. It would be fun to go back for Chinese New Year.

SHOWCASING THINGS

Often I contemplate the differences and similarities between fashion and style. While fashion can be profuse, I feel that commonly style cannot... and where there may be style, there may not have necessarily been a profuse offering of fashion. I view fashion as a means, and style as an expression. I consider my personal style as definitively eclectic (hence the blog name). How do you define the two? (I'd love to hear your feedback, leave in the comments!)

Recently I was interviewed by hot startup for style-savvy collectors and stuff-enthusiasts, Vibio, to chat all about my endeavor into fashion and some of my favorite collectibles. Check out the convo on their Showcase blog here; She's doing it a'la mode.

I keep books by my bedside, along with sentimental family photos and natural treasures.

My brass carnival horse shows off his stance nearby nautilus shells, coral, a lava rock and one of my hand-thrown ceramic 'mini-urns'.

There is a placid lakefront near my home with the perfect place to enjoy a bit of mid-winter sunshine seated on the docks. I can't believe how warm it has been this week for January! It feels great to begin to wear my springtime sheers like this blouse. Polka dots are a pattern that I'd usually stay away from, but I have to admit that they're growing on me. 1. Brightly-printed sheer pieces.
Worn one on top of another, organic-printed sheers evoke the layered delicacy and airiness du printemps.

MY BLOGGER PICKS AT FOREVER 21

Forever 21 opened the doors of its new 2 Stockton Street location in San Francisco this weekend. I was stoked to be one of the selected bloggers of the bay to arrive early for a preview of the three-tiered store and shop our favorite picks! Some of mine reveal a bit about my eclectic style... the first items I decided I needed to put my mark on are these awesome leopard-print platform wedges you've been seeing me wear so much.

Me, at 8:30am, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in my polka dots and ready to shop!

I carried my faux-ostrich clutch. I felt like an animal in spots, fur (stage right) and dots!

Saturday morning felt just like a Friday night with Wild 94.9 guest dj'ing on the first floor. I tried to keep my poise but secretly I wanted to bust out a dougie.

My leopard wedges! I love the comfort of their fit, honestly you feel as though they are custom-cut for you, but you're paying such an amazing price!

Here are a couple of my picks. I have a serious thing going on with velvet right now, and this little jacket is to die for.

I also love me some safari-dreamin'. This cute shirtdress is a choice idea to wear to work over layers and accessorized in bling when taken out at night.

I love this outfit. I would have marked the whole thing! Great layering of colors for the upcoming winter-into-spring.

I always enjoy seeing a trolley on my way home. It's like a little wish of luck from the city.

DIY INITIAL NECKLACE

A little bit Alice in Wonderland meets holiday glam with my easy idea to

make a statement (necklace) and sign it with your surname!

If you're still muddling through looks for your New Year's parties, try this do-it-yourself-er on for size. I put this little pretty together for a perfect morning-after tea and breakfast, so as to keep up with the cute and glam of my previous night's New Year's Eve partying.

1. I purchased the big part of this necklace — a beaded statement collar — already put together, but you can also make your own by braiding multiple strands of seed beads.

2. Then I added a big bow of simple black satin ribbon, easy to find at almost any craft or stationary store.

3. Next, I scoured my jewelry collection for an initial pendant and removed it from its chain.

4. Finally, all of the components can be attached easily together with a small safety pin or thread.

Party on!

Trendy Lime is Tri-continental! I rocked around the Christmas tree last week with Trendy Lime’s Holiday Soirée at Harlot, hot club in the city, one part in a trio of parties for the season’s festivities, as Trendy Limers also joined together in Brazil and Europe to celebrate.

Those of us in SF enjoyed the smooth atmosphere at Harlot, sipping our drinks and chatting away as painted murals watched on from dimly lit center tables and walls. The top floor bar was where I spent some of the night, people-watching from a balcony that overlooked Trendy Lime’s beautiful crowd of jet-setters, socialites and urban professionals. I love golden shimmering tones, especially when I get the chance to wear them just before sun set.

Another fun trend to try this season; glitter-flecked eyes and faux freckles, easily painted on with a thin brush liquid liner in a sparkly shade.

DIY POP-UP HOLIDAY CARDS

The holiday season is here!

Wanting to send warm and creative wishes to everyone on my list this year, I thought to myself... "why not make some pop-up cards." Given this was my first attempt ever since grade school at making folded paper into the third dimension... well, here ya go.

A sweet little winter wonderland of snow.

Here is how to make them yourself!

What you'll need:

*heavy weight paper or cardstock, 5"x7"

(I purchased bristol paper in bulk and then cut to size myself.)

*very precise scissors

*markers or art pens

*glue stick

*glitter, confetti, or any other decoration you would like to apply

(I used Sephora's gold top coat nail polish!)

How to!

Step 1. fold one of the paper cards in half, and cut out a fanciful pattern, this is your frame.

Step 2. pop up what you have just cut, and make a fold where the frame meets at the bottom edge.

Step 3. glue down this bottom folded edge of the frame to a second card, this is your ground.

Step 4. cut out more shapes to add into the scene and glue down to ground.

Step 5. glue another card to meet the ground and the top edge of the frame, this is your backdrop.

Step 6. decorate!

I try to add a dash of cool factor with the white silicone watch and snake clutch, just to look a bit more pulled-together on my day off. Forgive the Rainbows in Autumn, but I'm a California girl who likes to splurge on mani-pedis every now and then.

LEMON MERINGUE

Layering with yellow in wintertime... yes, it can easily be done. In all honesty, I'm lusting for it. I want to see throngs of people in yellow this winter. Cheer, people!

What with the winter months settling in over our heads, the cold will be here in no time. But that should be no reason to get your fashion-spunk-a-doo down. I say get footloose with your feisty self and rock it this season in hot hues and pastels. Why not? Pastel in the snow is totes going to be a seasonal reformation rather than a faux-pas. Here's how I'd do it;

1. Start with your yellow top. A pastel likeness is best for blending into your look.

2. Layer it on. Pull other pieces into your ensemble that are like the centerpiece in tonal value for a cohesive look. Pick an opposing color or stark bright for a contrasting look. Here I have chosen items that are similar to one another in tone.

3. Stick with accessorizing neutrals. Black, brown, or various stages of taupe can be your go-to's here. I've chosen black to bring out a bit of an edginess against such soft femininity reflected in the flowing cuts of the silhouette.

4. Finally, add some drama — in dashes. If your centerpiece is not too bold, you can bring in a few more topnotes with extra polish; a bit of bling, or a statement necklace.

Et Voila! You are oh, so chic! (And easily seen in the snow!)

Create a playful tone with the frills of a pleated lace skirt and feminine bow details. Accent with a hardier shoe.

2. BOYFRIEND-CHIC ON THE WEEKENDS.

Take a cue from the man's closet; mustard can act as a neutral. Pair it alongside other pales like soft gray and blue in lightly tailored layering.

3. LE SMOKING LOUNGE.

Get oh-so-comfy and glamourous with silky lines and the detailing of royalty; silk looks haute yet not over-the-top when given an edge of cool. Try studded slippers and a drapey circle scarf.

Stripes and knits and tights... Oh my! I love my new winter boots. They pull on, zip, buckle, and conform to your instep (I guess it must mean I'm getting old if that's something I look for in footwear.) I absolutely adore them. This is actually one of those cases where I get dressed in the morning with the intent of building an outfit around my shoes. Black tights or cigarette pants are ideal for a high-shaft like this, elongating the leg and drawing away from any opportunity for stub-leg-syndrome (you know what I mean, when your look gives you long killer lower legs but then cuts you off at the knees — literally — giving the impression of shorter, stubby hot-dog-like thighs.) Bleh. Years of sports have blessed me with strong muscles, but I need to watch for this mishap when dressing my legs. Weighty knit shorts deter from any addition of bulk-age, and although I could have kept the long and lean line going with something more vertical on top, I opted for horizontal stripes in a tonal play that works well with the shorts. My long hourglass necklace works in to continue the vertical line, and I added a shorter necklace for balance and to bring the focus of attention up to my face and away from the midline.

My friends and I have developed a ritual for stuffing our bellies only at certain restaurants in one another's neighborhoods when we make visits. Here I am sipping my miso soup at one such sushi place. It should be noted that reggae music was playing at 5 o'clock in the evening, while we dined on spicy tuna rolls and chicken katsu.

HOOKED ON A FEELING

I met up with photographer Sarah Deragon for a stroll through the city on an unusually balmy San Francisco evening. Most days our indian summer gives way to the night by four to five pm, but on this rare occasion, the warmth clung to you like steam in a washroom and the chill of the sea breeze had not yet broken the crest of the hills. It was so warm, that even a scarily large fire in the Haight had seemed caused by the sun. Sarah and I met up at the bart near Castro Theater and she caught some sweet shots of me walking around in the setting sun. I love them!

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

I met up with awesome photographer Paige Hermreck this weekend to test a new outfit and frolic among everything under the sun! I'd been meaning to get over to the Alemany Flea Market for-ever, and was so happy to have the time to check out all the wares. As if I couldn't have been more ecstatic to find a primo parking spot on this gorgeously hot day, I also scored a spiffy brass sculpted carnival horse! (See inset pic of me holding it.) Chester-Charles, as I have named him, will be sitting atop my desk in all his brassy glory. Paige also came away with a nice collection of mason jars and a cool pair of silvery earrings!

As I mentioned, it was definitely warm with this short heat wave we're experiencing, but I felt breezy in an open-weave lace top and bright silky skirt. I am OBSESSED with this skirt!! Definitely watch for it to make its way into multiple outfit ideas... if you have any questions on how to bring a big colorblock of brights into your wardrobe mix for Fall — observe option numero uno, many more to come... And more work with Paige as well!

TSUBO AMONG THE GREENERY

It's been so beautifully warm out lately, but that doesn't mean I can't still work the layers for San Francisco Bay sub-climates! I was sent these luscious boots by Tsubo... they will be my perfect fall to winter boots this season! Mixable and durable to accent anything I wear from everyday to the snow, I can see myself adding them to so many easy outfits as an accent piece. What I really like about them is the tread on the bottom that not only cushions while I walk, but helps to keep traction in the case that I do travel this year onto icy roads (or slippery marble floors!) The color is great, very rich... and it matches so much of my wardrobe! Even if you're unsure of how to style your transition outfits with boots, these make it easy. A mix between heavy-duty and classy streetwear, I can pull them off with jeans or perhaps a bright orange silky skirt! Look on to see a great outfit for summer to fall wear with leather booties!

BOCCE BALL

This is the outfit I wore playing bocce ball at one of my favorite wineries the other weekend with boyfriend's folks and little brother. My midwestern bf made the observation that bocce must be to California what horseshoes is in his home state. The objectives are similar. As in bocce, you have a ball, whereas in horseshoes, you have a stake in the ground. The team that has their ball or horseshoe closest to the stake or target ball wins the point. Multiple points also depend on the land of your throw and factor into scoring as well.

Bocce is a simple game, but I love it. And I prefer playing it on a traditional stone-dust court rather than some of the commercialized green ones... I like the feeling of the chalk across the palm of your hand and fingers when you pick up the ball... most likely the same (and only) reason I endured the years of gymnastics training among my other childhood sports involvements. Honestly, I went to class for the chalk bucket. It was so fun to powder up before frightfully gripping to the bars (I have a strange fear of heights — more like, nervousness being off-balance without solid low-grounded footing) and whirling around them like a bat out of hell. Let's not even talk about the balance beams...

But bocce is fun. If you are unaware of the rules of the game, I could teach you and beat you in about five minutes. The small ball — the pallino — (I always accidentally call it polenta) is tossed out onto the court, the further towards the back wall the more the challenge, and this becomes the two teams' target. Each team then tries to toss their bocci to land as close to the pallino as possible, without hitting the back wall. Hitting the back wall disqualifies your ball, but knocking the other team's ball does not. The first team to nine points wins the round.

TRENDYLIME HAS GONE INTERNATIONAL

JETLAG Bossanova — now another fun-filled party notched on TrendyLime's stylish belt — was held on August 25th at Harlot. With the Trendylime team's recent return from a trip out to Brazil, the idea was to bring back a bit of Sao Paolo to San Francisco. The party got underway with a performance by "Trio do Leste" led by Shmuel Daffner, founder of Batucada do Leste, tunes spun by DJ Nader and DJ Playdoughboy, and plenty of dancing, as the some 150 guests discovered their inner "sambista". A raffle was held to win pairs of Havaianas, and the first 50 guests were lucky winners of complimentary passes to Bay Club Financial District! Part of the proceeds of this party were donated to select charities in Brazil; Casa do Zezinho, and the Favela Development Project.

EÀLM IN DENIM

Happy September! This usually marks the start of our late Indian summers out here... considering that one year it was hot all the way into what some would consider "Autumn" —Halloween in Summer— I'm pretty excited that I can now start wearing all of my transitional pieces. What better to sport in the turn of warm picnicking days than my new all-denim ensemble. The jeans, compliments of Levi's, are a demi fit skinny in dark wash. I was personally measured and sized for these at the Levi's San Francisco Blogger party on Tuesday, held at their headquarters at Levi's Plaza below Telegraph Hill. We were treated to styling sessions with the staff, a trip into the vault, and some of the cutest dandy little root beer floats I have ever seen. The vault was a very cool experience, getting to see the years of history behind Levi's denim-making up close and personal is something every fashion lover in SF should do. My jacket, also Levi's, is a piece I have long waited to add to my closet. This one fits like a glove and looks polished. I was so inspired by my visit to the Levi's HQ and my new outfit, that I decided it must be captured in more ways than one. Enjoy the short film amidst the pictures!

SMELLING OF CEDAR AND PLUM IS NOT JUST FOR THE BOYS.

I love sexy man cologne. I love smelling it in their stores, I love smelling it on my boyfriend's shirts. And now I have officially become an addict of wearing men's cologne myself.

The initial culprit; Marc Jacobs' BANG. To quote the Facebook Fan Page, "Bang is fresh, peppery, woody... full of power for the man with an electrifying and youthful spirit." Well now, while I don't know a thing about about jock straps or how to write my name in snow, I sure like smelling of cedar and can appreciate the zest of a passionate life. I became acquainted with this scent at a Beauty Trend Show by Nordstrom last Fall, brought my petit bottle with me to visit some girlfriends on the East Coast, and was told I smelled like a forested closet at most dinners and shopping excursions. I was glad. The woodsy scent conjures reminiscents of summer nights under Mount Tallac and daydreams of rummaging through Narnian wardrobes... very fond childhood memories I'm happy to spritz on.

The affirming culprit, and most recent addition to my expansive parfumerie, is Banana Republic's Republic of Men. A fragrance of plum, fig leaf, sambac, basil, sage and rosemary, one little dab exudes plumes of dewy sweetness throughout the day. The undercurrent of crushed hazelnut couples to produce bewitchments of fire and sugar plum fairies. I've been wearing it to work, on my days off, out and about with the boyfriend... and it seems pleasingly to fit any occasion. The funny thing with parfums and colognes is that they smell slightly different on everyone. The chemicals of each grounding and accent layer react with the natural pheromones of a person, and so a fragrance may have a different impression on a body than in the bottle. This lasting scent on me is sweeter, with stronger notes of the plum and fig picked up than the sage and rosemary topnotes hinting from a whiff of the bottle. I'm hooked. And I don't care if I sometimes shop in the men's section.
